I would like to call MARY JANE’s premiere ONE OF THE BEST NIGHTS IN HAITIAN CINEMA.

If you ask me a few months ago before seeing “Mary Jane’s trailer – is there hope for the Haitian Cinema, I would have answered no because I’ve seen so many Haitian movies that disappointed me. A few months ago a friend suggest that I check out MARY JANE’S trailer I was so amazed with what i saw, never have I seen a trailer that caught my attention so much at least not in the Haitian movie industry. For once there was a trailer with a message, for once there was a TRAILER, a trailer that was not a 10 minutes “scene” from the movie, for once the trailer tell me what the film is going to be about without giving the full story away and I know I had to be at the premiere.

The premiere of “Mary Jane” was a lot more than what I was expected, I’ve been to a few Haitian movie Premiere and I have to tell you the atmosphere in the theater was different, it was a mix crowd, Haitian, American, Spanish, you name it. You feel the excitement in the theater .For so long I’ve heard people talk and write about how we should produce film for anyone from any background to watch; well I am proud to say “MARY JANE” accomplishes that. The presentation, the people, the media, it was truly one of the best Premiere I have ever been to.

“THE FILM”
Words to describe “MARY JANE,” Brilliant, breathtaking, emotional and powerful.
How many Haitian parents work two jobs morning till night the only time for their kids is when they are dropping and picking them up at the Babysitter, a family member or a friend’s house? How many Haitian parents really know how their children’s’ days are like?

Mary Jane is a film for all parents to see. This film has such a great message, such an important subject, one we don’t often talk about in our Haitian culture “Child sexual Abuse.” The people behind this film did such an amazing job relaying the message. I can’t find one negative things to say about the actors they did such an amazing job very professional, when they were crying you almost wanted to cry along with them yes I did drop a few tears. The editing of the film oh man amazing job, the quality was on point, dialogue. I was able to follow thru from the beginning until the end of the film. The director of the film did such an amazing job. The interesting thing for me while watching the film I never once thought I was watching a Haitian film; I was watching a powerful film made by a group of Haitian man, and that made me really proud to see the work that they have done. I would encourage you all to support this film, to continue to support the Haitian cinema after what I saw on Saturday whether these guys continue in the Haitian market or move on to other market they have successfully leave a mark in Haitian cinema.

What I walk away with is a great message, one that all parents should know: Parents talk to your child be your child best friend that way when there’s something wrong or someone is hurting your child they can always come to you. Parent don’t assume everything is fine, don’t assume because your child is acting out, your child behavior is abnormal that mean they are hanging with the wrong crowd or they are at the age. Talk to you child, find out what your child days are like. The most important thing from this film is if you are a victim of child sexual abuse, you need to speak up; you need to let somebody know you can’t be help if you stay silent don’t let your abuser win, do not let your abuser silent you, once you speak they have no power over you, they cant hurt you anymore no matter what your abuser tell you like Mary Jane said “PALE.”

This film “Mary Jane” started the conversation on Saturday July 17 in such an amazing and positive way, let continue the conversation, let break the silence on child sexual abuse.

Congratulations to the cast and the crew of “MARY JANE” on an amazing job.

Marie Jane was really boring I almost fall asleep, the movie could have been better if they did not stop going on flash back after flashback, the editing garbage the color was cartoonish, too yellowish, it’s look like everyone on the screen was glowing. beside the english language wish make this movie a little different from certain Haitian movie there is not much more, too many gap in the story, I can feel the script writer was tired and wanted to end this the easy way. What’s up with that ending, the girl [spoiling...] and now she’s teaching kids in class (wow what kind of lesson is that? ) where is the moral now…. over all I’ll give it a straight 6/10.

Mary Jane was great! Very moving.

I would like to add my opinion to this thread. I have seen a lot of Haitian films and comparing Mary Jane to what I have seen would do it an injustice. The cast WOW… I truly did not feel for a moment that I was watching a Haitian film. I truly felt I was in the theater watching a movie that happened to made by Haitians…

    The Minuses:
My take on the film. Overall I would give it a high 8/10 only because I felt that some of the scenes dragged on a bit to long.

    The pluses:
This movie is full of emotion the audience were glued to the screen and I think the film keeps you from the very moment it starts to the very end.

One thing I will tell you. There were a lot of tears in the theater. WOW…

As I say the acting were on point for every actors.

    Conclusions:
This movie Mary Jane is a must see… I would highly recommend this film to any one whether Haitian or otherwise as evident by what we saw on July 17th

I was a little disappointed on the camera glow effect. I guess it was the lens or filter they used to shoot the film. Other than that Mary Jane is superbly directed, powerfully emotional drama with a sharply written script and terrific performances.

Not quite the Haitian movie masterpiece it’s been painted as. It is, however, a very good work and an amazingly brave one.

    congratulations to the team.

Editing was kinda jumpy in some scenes. Though I like the dolly moves, not all of them were smooth. Overall, the story was on point and the cast did an excellent job.

We can try to give a good review without criticizing another. theirs not a movie here on movie lakay that someone for some reason doesnt think is the best..
to begin with i would like to congratulate the people behind this movie for taking on this Taboo of a subject.I don’t feel the need to compare it to others for the simple fact that this is a very unik subject and for those who can relate would find it amazing. Mary jane is a nice movie that belongs to festivals but im afraid on a marketable stand point would be very difficul to pitch .this is a family movie that some would prefer to watch once or twice from the privacy of their home rather than Theater, theirs a reason why Hollywood stay away from those, bcuz of its content.Above all I must say im satisfied with the movie.
they kept it simple, not too many characthers, not too many locations. made it simple and it work for the story..keep it up guys. just stay away from the feedbacks good or bad believe it or not it might change the course of your plan, it only gives u mix feelings about what to do with a finish project…dont change a thing and keep focus.

I am on here to speak about the film Mary Jane as an audience member and not a filmmaker. I walked into the theatre feeling that way because not only was the theatre in fact a true theatre, but the performers in the film took me into their lives and I was lost in the story within the first 5 minutes. To start off I would like to say that the writer/director did an in depth character study before taking on this subject. You can see the character Mary Jane transform after being abused. She had all the mannerisms and emotions that I would expect from a child abuse victim. Then you noticed how all the other characters transformed after realizing something is off with her. The story was well thought out and the shots where created with precision. This film is very intelligent and doesn’t hold back on true emotions. What I really enjoyed was that the camera didn’t move unless there was a purpose. For example there is a scene when MJ was sitting with her father and they where both letting out emotions to each other (father verbal, MJ none Verbal) and the camera did not move or change angles for about 4 minutes. I think that was brilliant because I was sitting there looking at raw emotions and camera tricks where not needed to make me feel like I was there. That is great performances on all ends of the production spectrum. The cinematographer and director knew that it would be risky, but understand the psychology in doing so. We need more films like this in the world. This is true story telling. No CGI. No million dollar budget, just true story telling. I also talked about this film days after. I am happy our community is starting to create art for the world to see and not just our community. Let us let the world see our talents.

Heres my 2cents: first off, this was a great movie. Mary Jane can not be mentioned in the same breath as the other movies on Movie Lakay. This movie was dramatically & emotionally inspiring. @M.L I don’t want to spoil the movie but I think the very last scene explained what happened to the uncle. @Tony – that was one of my favorite scenes too. Geni (I think that’s his name) & Astrid was Brilliant.

to Samantha Louis..you gotta be kidding me..did we watch the same trailer, my God. Lala trailer got more kick than this, dont get me Started with The Birth of an Assassin, have you seen SonSon. The trailer wasnt that captivating. Now its ok to boost up the move, clearly youre a fan and to be honest the movie was nice but dragged a lot, nice because it was a different story that most people or movie maker would stay away from. But be really careful on how your putting yourself up while dragging others down because theirs plenty of great haitian movie outher for you not to insult other people intelligence when saying their wasnt hope for the haitian industry befor mary jane..you need to take that insulting comment back.im furious with, every body thinks their movie is the best, no its not..mary jane is slow to develop, it felt like a soap opera that unfolded under one roof, with just the main characters,im happy with the over all because it was a nice story ..no where near the best…go watch the following movie,….sonson, pluie despoir, nathalie, the birth of an assassin, cafe au lait, cousine, oasis,le president a til le sida, most jean gardy film, most of reginald lubin film, sachat parisot film, richard senecal film, raynald delerme, samuel vincent, tutu demosthe, mora etienne. etc…please get serious and take your insult back..these guys are all haitians, not creole.

Mary Jane the movie is a great film. I’ve watched quite a few independent films and this film to me can stand on its own with the best of them. More than having great entertainment value, the film did a good job in bringing to life the issue of sexual abuse. It was able to convey the turmoil that sexual abuse can bring and how it affects not only the individual being abused but in some cases entire families and communities.

The film was good in the way that, it was not predictable. Many of the choices made creatively were not expected. Some people may like this and others may not, but that just depends on each individual’s taste. Personally, that is what I loved most about the film- the fact that I never really knew what would happen next. The actors were also very skilled and seemed to have embodied their character. Many independent films can seem staged and more like plays, but not this one. Every scene was meticulously planned out and appeared to flow seamlessly into the next- allowing the audience to feel like they were part of the film.

To every masterpiece there is always room for improvement, so this review would not be a good one if improvements were not suggested. In regards to this film, the only thing I would recommend improving is related to audio. There were a few minor audio level inconsistencies in some of the scenes of the film. However, this issue was not big enough where it totally disrupted the film or took away from it theatrically. Nonetheless, if this is fixed, it would only help make the film better!

Special recognition should be given to the writer behind this film. Anyone can write a script, but only a select few people can bring originality to something that has been done before. There have been films about sexual abuse, but none like this one. This film was produced in such a way that it was able to captivate the attention of the audience and make the issue of sexual abuse relevant to each viewer. What I also found ingenious about the film is that each scene portrayed an emotion or event that I’m sure at least one sexual abuse victim can relate to, allowing the film to be able to paint a complete depiction of the issue of sexual abuse. As a result, Mary Jane does not just represent a single abuse victim, but instead gives a voice to all sexual abuse victims.

Overall I think the film did a great job in combining the right levels of drama, suspense, creativity and realism to create a piece that is truly original and stands out from all other films of this nature.

The movie looks promising and I am always happy for new directors. However, after having seen the trailer, I feel that there is an absolutely very false note which is shown in the uncle looking absolutely creepy. How is it that the parents could so be so pathetically blind to leave their daughter with such a man, which must be distracting fact when watching the movie. As such, I think the uncle should have been depicted as the unsuspecting adorable uncle as the way it usually occurs and as it was tangentially depicted in Monsoon Wedding.
